if the b/l shows port of loading port x and place of receipt port y and the l/c stipulates port x be the the port of loading and does'nt mention a place of receipt, is the b/l date is the date of shipment from port x or y? and is an on board notation must be mentioned?

i like the question. this is the very reason why UCP takes so strong position on on board notation. while you can not understand from a bill of lading the date of shipment, how can you say that the bill of lading is compliant?

the bill of lading is discrepant and requires a on board notation showing the date of shipment, the name of the vessel and the port of loading.

first thank you for your reply, but provided that the b/l date is the date of sailing from port of loading which in this case is the port of loading required in the l/c, why do we need an on board notation?

im on a rush now. so making some quick comment. from the bill of lading, as you mentioned, it is possible that the bill of lading was issued at the place of receipt. in fact most of the freight forwarder does so. hence the issuance date of the bill of lading may be actually the date of receipt

The UCP 600 article 20 states that the B/L should:

"indicate that the goods have been shipped on board a named vessel at the port of loading stated in the credit by:
- pre-printed wording, or
- an on board notation indicating the date on which the goods have been shipped on board"
