WHAT IS MOTHER B/L AND DAUGHTER B/L IN OIL LCs?

Post by ORUNMILA » Sat Aug 15, 2009 5:21 am

Dear all

often time as issuing bank we establish lc for importers importing refined petroleum products. upon presentation of document we often require that the mother b/l is presented to authenticate the original port of loading as document presented often indicate port of loading as e.g ''offshore Cotonou'' as against country of supply being e.g Neitherland

my challenge has always been accepting the Terms : ''MOTHER B/L AND DAUGHTER B/L'' as internationally accepted terms in the explication of the above scenario. does anyone has similar experience? :-?

Mother B/L and Daughter B/L

Post by mkp » Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:27 pm

Hi Orunmila
This topic relates to STS operation or Ship-to-ship transfer operation . It is the transfer of cargo between seagoing ships positioned alongside each other specially for crude oil, liquefied gas (LPG or LNG), and petroleum products. The ship which pump cargo to a second ship is called Mother tankship and the second ship which receives the cargo is named Daughter tankship. In this regard each ship has its own B/L, i.e respectively Mother B/L and Daughter B/L.
Of course non of a/m B/L has Mother or Daughter title or lable on their face. These terms are somehow used for Categorizing types of Bills of lading.
